An Ecosphere is an enclosed ecosystem, cut off from the rest of the world. All of the components (plants, animals, precipitation) work to create an ecosystem that does not require outside interference (such as cleaning, filtration, feeding, ect). Ecospheres are very sustainable. As long as you have the right components, they can exist for months, years, even decades, and theoretically could survive forever.
