The garden hibiscus (Hibiscus syriacus) or althea shrub according to its former name, is related to the Chinese rose, which is kept as a houseplant. The plant is native to most of Asia. Hibiscus syriacus is the only species from this plant family that is sufficiently winter-hardy to be planted in the garden here.
